Ernst UDET built this glider in 1927, with which he attempted to make a flight in the Alps, at the Zugspitze (summit of the Bavarian Alps, highest point in Germany) in April of the same year. The glider bears the colors of the Münchner Illustrierte, a major magazine of the time.
"Alpensegler" - Technical Description
Type: Single-seat glider for high-altitude flying.
Fuselage: Wooden construction with plywood skin.
The fuselage tapers laterally towards the rear. The bottom of the fuselage is unkeeled, with a skid centered underneath.
Tail: Fabric-covered wooden construction. Removable from the fuselage for easier transport.
Wing: Fabric-covered wooden construction. The wing is detachably mounted behind the cockpit on the upper side of the fuselage, in a slight dihedral. Bracing is provided by a tensioning tower protruding from the upper side of the fuselage to the upper side of the wing, and from the underside of the wing to the lower side/corner of the fuselage.
Landing Gear: Spring-loaded skid centered at cockpit level
under the fuselage.
