In July 1942, Focke-Wulf prepared technical documentation on a four-engine Fw 491 aircraft. Additionally, the company's management Focke-Wulf was offered the following: since the supply of the propulsion system for twin-engine Fw 191 canceled, then the remaining prototypes were converted into four-engine with the installation of Jumo 211 J. This new version with engines of the Jumo 211 J type, indexed Fw 491. In order to save time and To simplify the production and supply of the necessary structural elements, it was decided to adopt these elements from the Fw 191. The power plant of this variant weighed about two tons more than the Fw 191 variant with two Jumo 222 engines. In order to withstand the specified restrictions in terms of the maximum take-off weight of the new version, it was decided to reduce the amount of fuel and, accordingly, Thus, the flight range has also decreased somewhat. In this case, normal The take-off weight was 23.2 tons and the estimated flight range with normal fuel supply decreased to 3050 kilometers; in the reloading version - up to 3700 Kilometers.

To speed up the work, Focke-Wulf decided to use a power plant completely copied from the Ju 88. All fuel was to be placed in the fuselage in the five flexible fuel tanks with a capacity of 960 liters each. Wingspan Fw 491 increased from 25 to 26 meters, respectively, the wing area increased from 70 to 75 m². From a technological point of view, the changes in the design of the wing were so extensive that the time required to manufacture the wing of the Fw 491 was a third of the time required to build the wing of the original version of the Fw 191. For the Fw 491, defensive armament with manual control was provided: MG 151 machine gun in defensive mount "A", HD 151/2 in defensive mount mount "B1", HD 151/2 in defensive mount "B" and MG 151 machine gun in defensive installation "C".

It is possible that the Fw 491 was also considered as a replacement for the Fw 200, flight the characteristics of which were relatively low. However, all these plans could not be carried out due to the current state of affairs. 30 June 1942, the RLM management ordered the development of the Fw 191 in version with separately installed engines. As a result, they remained clean reflections on this project. The prototype was never Built.
