Dietrich designation for the Raab-Katzenstein Kl 1 "Schwalbe"
DP XI-Schwafbe, a necessary clarification
It is understandable that Dietrich later bitterly referred to a new aircraft developed by his former team at Raab-Katzenstein, the world-famous Raab-Katzenstein-Schwalbe, as a Dietrich design. This led to the situation that Dietrich claimed the Schwalbe under the name DP XI as his spiritual creator, even though it was not designed and built in his factory. In 1926 he also published corresponding reports in the trade press, while the aircraft was actually designed and built by his former employees at the Raab-Katzenstein works. This is the result of long and difficult research. In order to do justice to the truth, this must be stated quite clearly here. The Schwalbe is a product of Raab-Katzenstein. Because of the oddity of two companies claiming ownership of an aircraft, the DP XI (Dietrich designation), in reality the Raab-Katzenstein Schwalbe, will be described in this report. A multi-coloured three-view view of this aircraft is also provided. Details will be given in a later report.on the Raab-Katzenstein works. The Schwalbe was without doubt an aerodynamically refined development of the proven DP Ila. The cantilever biplane with two N-stems also had two seats one behind the other. The series was planned to have light metal planking from the pilot's seat to the tail. The wings were covered with wood up to the rear spar. The model had ailerons on the upper and lower wings for the first time, which were connected to one another by a stem. Despite the larger wingspan, the maneuverability was almost the same as that of the DP Ila. It was powered by an 80 hp Siemens Sh 5 radial engine.
