The famous German pilot and designer Richard Dietrich, after a short work in his own company Dietrich Flugzeugwerke AG, moved to the large company MIAG Mühlenbau & Industrie AG. Dietrich began his activities in the new location with the development of the MD.12 light multi-purpose aircraft .
The aircraft was a two-seat two-column biplane, equipped with a 150 hp seven-cylinder radial Siemens-Halske Sh 14 A engine.
The tests of the aircraft were successful, but serial production did not follow, since MIAG had already signed contracts for licensed production of He. 46 and planned to produce the Ar.66C as well . Therefore, the MD.12 remained only an experimental vehicle, although it nevertheless received a civil registration number D-EDNO .
