At the beginning of March 1939 RLM leaders decided to send two Heinkel He 115 floatplanes to Spain. The main aim was to test the machines in Mediterranean conditions. The team was led by Ing. Gerhard Geike. The aircraft took off on 26 March from Travemiinde and, after Ianding at Friedrichshafen, they arrived at Puerto di Pollensa in Majorca. For their ferry flight the aircraft were registered as D-AHOS and D-ANPT. Flying personnel consisted of airmen of E-Stelle See, includpig three pilots: Lt. Fiehn, Lt. Jondray and Lt. Wachsmuth, R/T operator Schröder and two flight engineers: Burmeister and Dortmundt.
The aircraft received military markings typical for aircraft of the nationalist side. They were not assigned any code numbers, though, and are therefore often not included in listings.
The machines were allocated to Aufklärungsstaffel 88 of Legion Condor. Several reconnaissance missions were flown over the coast, but no republican aircraft were encountered. The war was nearing its end and encounters with republican fighters were rare.
At the end of April the aircraft were presented to an official Spanish delegation. By that time Spain has only used Heinkel He 60 and Arado Ar 95 floatplanes, which had become obsolete aircraft by then. Thus the modem Heinkel He 115 made strong impression. At the beginning of May 1939 both machines retumed to Germany. A report said that the aircraft were largely wom. Corrosion affected the floats and underside of wings. In the future the floats of Heinkel He 115s were additionally painted with an anti-corrosion paint.
