The flying test model Göppingen Gö 8 was built at the Schemp-Hirth factory in Göppingen. Ulrich Hütter designed the model. It was a replica of the planned  Dornier flying boat Do 214 on a scale of 1: 5 and was used to test the Flettner rudder steering on the elevator of the aircraft and for  testing of the bulges attached to the boat hull.
The motorless test model built entirely in wood possessed retractable main wheels in the fuselage as well as a tail wheel at the end of the keel. The Gö 8 was equipped with a waterproof boat hull and was built before the war began. Testflown by  Hanna Reitsch at Oberpfaffen- with wheels.  as well as towed by a motor boat on the sea with numerous flight attempts.
There was a place for the pilot in the fuselage an a testing engineer. A tight full-view hood offered good all-round visibility After the test flights in Oberpfaffenhofen and on Lake Constance it returned to Göttingen for investigation in detail of its  aerodynamic properties in order to draw conclusions about the flying characteristics of the Do 214.
