The A.120 was a conventional, parasol-wing monoplane with fixed tailskid undercarriage which accommodated the pilot and observer in tandem open cockpits. The design was based on a wing developed for the Ansaldo A.115 and the fuselage of the Dewoitine D.1 fighters that Ansaldo had built under licence. The type was operated in modest quantities by the Italian Air Force, and was exported to the air forces of Austria and Lithuania, the latter's machines remaining in service until the Soviet annexation of the country.
In 1926, Ansaldo became a subsidiary of Fiat. This solved the issue of choosing an engine for the aircraft. In the same year, an upgraded version of the aircraft was produced with a new fuselage, tail section and landing gear. This aircraft received the designation A-120 Ady . A new Fiat A.22T engine was installed on the plane. The aircraft was put into serial production. Until 1928, 57 aircraft were produced, of which two were ordered for the Austrian Air Force and 12 for the Lithuanian Air Force. The latter were in service until 1940.

Also for Austria, 6 aircraft of the modernized version of the aircraft - A.120R were made. The main differences were the installation of a new radiator and a modernized observer cockpit. A total of 77 copies of the A-120 were built (including prototypes).
