Type History
L V1 Reconnaissance and horizontal bomber, converted from K-1. In the winter of 1942/43.
L V2 High altitude reconnaissance aircraft, equivalent to L V1 and K-1.
The basic design of the Do 217L, which was completed at the same time - it had nothing to do with the Do 217L V1 and V2, which were ready for flight at the end of 1943, as these were only test vehicles for a new defensive armament and a new cabin concept - remained just a project, just like the Do 217A with altitude chamber. While the LV1 and V2 adhered entirely to the E-2 design, the appearance of the Do 217 L altitude version had changed considerably due to the flat-glazed pressurized cabin, the 26.14 m wing and the new engine system. The calculated performance of this version could be significantly increased by the planned installation of two DB 603 H/C 3s with their 2000 HP. At 8700 m full pressure altitude and GM 1 addition, the calculated speed at 12000 m was just under 600 km/h. The maximum ceiling height is given as 15200 m. Although the HZ could not yet be taken into account in these designs - the order for the first HZ was only received by Daimler-Benz on May 22, 1941 - the mathematical basis for German high-altitude aircraft was already groundbreaking.
