Do 17 S. The experiences of the Spanish Civil War demonstrated that the Do 17 P that had just arrived on the peninsula were not as fast and invulnerable as was first thought since these, poorly armed, were easy prey for the new ones. Soviet Polikarpov I-16 fighters. These lessons led Dornier designers to incorporate new defensive machine guns. To do this, they redesigned the cabin with a new front finish, providing it with more space and greater visibility with an extensive glass area all around it, the roof extends upward above the line of the fuselage, which descends to meet it just in front of the wing. The dorsal machine gun was moved to the rear where it had a better field of fire. Likewise, the floor was removed under the fuselage for a ball-style casemate for defensive armament, and the ventral machine gun was moved to the rear, allowing it to fire directly rearward. Changes to the roof and floor made the entire front of the aircraft much larger. The rest of the airframe remains the same. The aircraft now looked much more like the Junkers Ju 88 than previous models, and was no longer referred to as the flying pencil. The new cockpit design was nicknamed Kampfkopf (German: "warhead").

The increase in weight and drag was somewhat counteracted by the search for more powerful engines. Three prototypes of the S variant were tested with the DB 600 G inline engines.

The Do 17S-0 was a reconnaissance model powered by Dimmler-Benz 600G engines and a crew increased to five men.
Three built S-1, S-2, S-3, Used for test purposes, these had an extensively glazed nose and the airframe incorporated a bulged section in the underside of the forward fuselage, accommodating a gunner in a prone position to operate an aft-firing MG 15 machine-gun
