The BMW designers broke fresh ground in the layout of this flying-wing bomber. In order to retain directional stability together with the inherent stability of the swept wing, the two BMW 109-018 jet engines were located in the middle of the fuselage. This arrangement would provide sufficient inherent stability should one engine fail. Engine air was delivered via bifurcated trunking from the nose intake. A ventral bath below this trunking offered ample space and visibility for the bomb-aimer and obviated the need for a fully glazed nose.
