Despite the Versailles lockdown Junkers Flugzeugwerke continued to develop military aircraft. The next such aircraft was the K.53 light reconnaissance aircraft released in 1927. It was an armed version of the A.35 light multi-purpose aircraft (following its system, the designation on the military model was simply reversed by the numbers 3 and 5). P

compared to the civilian version, the modifications were quite minor, the main difference between the K.53 was the presence of a turret with a 7.7-mm machine gun in the observer's cockpit. In addition to the main purpose of the K.53, it could be used as a light fighter and attack aircraft. It could be used from field airfields, as well as from the water surface of rivers and lakes (for these purposes, it was equipped with floats).

Just like previous Junkers Flugzeugwerke K.53 military aircraft, it was built at the A.B. Flygindustri in Limhamn (Sweden). Under the designation Junkers / AFI R53, a small batch of aircraft was delivered to the Turkish Air Force. Then 20 aircraft were delivered to the Red Army Air Force (some of them were re-equipped at the Fili plant from A.35, retaining the old designation Yu-20) and 21 to China.
