The aircraft of which we publish above the photograph is certainly one of the first amphibious gliders that have been built and consecrated by a remarkable performance: it is, in fact, the glider with which the German pilot Jachtmann beat the record for duration in a tandem last November by 13 h. 59 min. of flight.
It is a cantilever-wing monoplane with a wingspan of 18 m., a surface area of 20 mq. Built by Richard Mihm, it has the particularity of being able to be used as a land glider or as a hydro-glider. Small wheels are mounted on the sides of the fuselage, but the fuselage is formed by a double box allowing it to start from the water or to land on it. It's a real shell. The aircraft offers, it seems, great maneuverability, thanks to the differential control of the ailerons. At present, there is only one order, but provision has been made for the installation of a second control at the passenger station to allow the two of them to carry out long flights. A very simple device already allows the broom handle to be extended at will; The pilot can thus adopt an almost prone position to rest.
In its record flight of 13 h 59 min., manned by Ernst Jachtmann and K. Flossdorf, the amphibious glider was towed by a car-winch over a distance of only 700 meters. It was dropped at 300 meters at 11:01 a.m., in the vicinity of the Red Rock, on the island of Sylte (North Sea). The aircraft took off from the water. During the whole flight, it remained at a height of 100 m., along the dunes of the coast, in rises of 2 km. wide.
Ernst Jachtmann already holds the record for the longest time in a single-seater glider by 40 hours 55 min., since the spring of 1937.
